The Sunterra North development, also known as The Retreat, serves as the amenity center anchoring the Sunterra residential community located east of the Harris/Waller County line. Consisting of four structures, the recurring theme among these buildings is the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces both visually and physically. The larger restroom building adjacent to the kids' splash pad features a spacious game area equipped with sectional glass doors that remain open during operational hours, facilitating easy access for residents to move between indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, the fitness and clubhouse buildings serve as central gathering spots where residents can host private events. These buildings are designed with expansive storefront walls on all sides to maximize views of the outdoor amenities. Moreover, the gathering space includes large folding doors leading out onto patios, enabling a fluid transition from indoor to outdoor programs.

Connecting to The Site

The design of the Sunterra North recreation center emphasizes a seamless connection between the buildings and the surrounding site. Originally programmed as a single structure, the Clubhouse and Fitness buildings were later separated and angled slightly to optimize views of the pool area. This adjustment resulted in more functional spaces and established a central axis that serves as the entry point. The placement of the pool restroom building ensures direct accessibility from both the pool and splash pad, while also facilitating connections to the main courtyard activities.

The Design

The Clubhouse and fitness facilities provide opportunities for the indoor program to seamlessly expand onto adjacent patios using sectional and folding doors. However, the most captivating integration of outdoor and indoor spaces was achieved through the careful selection of materials. The expansive stone walls that flank the Clubhouse and Fitness areas were extended from the exterior of the buildings into the main gathering and fitness rooms, creating a seamless sense of continuity no matter the vantage point.
