Spanish Height Church, a primarily Hispanic congregation located in the Spring area, is experiencing rapid growth and requires additional infrastructure. This master plan project focused on making minimal modifications to the existing church while designing the site and a proposed gymnasium building to be highly flexible. The new design aims to accommodate large sermons, baptisms, and other events, ensuring that the church can meet the needs of its expanding community.

Concepts

Initial studies focused on expanding available parking while simultaneously maximizing outdoor usable space and improving the flexibility of the gymnasium program. Among the proposed solutions, some studies recommended the integration of an outdoor water feature that could serve a dual purpose as a baptismal font. Additionally, efforts were made to establish connections between the two buildings by incorporating plaza spaces into the design, facilitating seamless transitions and enhancing the overall coherence of the campus layout.

Final Master Plan

In the end, the church decided to retain the classrooms within the gymnasium building and repurpose the gymnasium as a versatile space with a movable baptismal font. This choice allowed for the creation of additional much-needed parking while still maintaining the gymnasium's adaptability to host a wide range of events. By opting for this configuration, the church achieved a practical balance between parking requirements and the flexible utilization of indoor spaces, ensuring that both functional needs and programming versatility were adequately addressed.
