Redbud Pool Pavilion is a restroom pavilion for the pool of a community themed after the Redbud tree. The Redbud tree is native to Texas and is known for its vibrant pink flowers that bloom in early spring. It is special because of its adaptability to hot, dry climates and its attractive heart-shaped foliage that provides year-round coverage. This tree brought inspiration to the design of the pavilion.

Sketching

A project of this size and scope could be reduced to a shed roof covering two restrooms and call it a day. However, we wanted to challenge ourselves to try something different and special for this project with meaning behind it. When we received the first logo concepts for the neighborhood, we got our first clue into the direction that this project would take. We were particularly interested in a logo that featured a Redbud tree branch. The shape was abstracted and made to be the shape of the truss. Thus, the Redbud would be expressed in the shape of the roof and truss.

The Design

The concept of the roof truss was presented to the client and the landscape architect, who appreciated it. Ultimately, the structural requirements of the roof changed the course of the design to a more typical truss shape. We landed on a dual slope truss that is not exactly an abstraction of a Redbud branch but is more unique than a typical shed or gable roof that dominates the designs of a typical restroom pool pavilion. The restrooms were clad in wood siding and feature a cast-in-place concrete wainscot for the walls and the timber columns. The combination of wood, concrete, and metal gives the pavilion a Texas modern materiality, and the roof completes its unique design.
