After the initial design charrette and client meeting, it was decided to develop two main design concepts into the architectural shade elements for the park. The first design took a literal approach, resembling a butterfly descending for water or food. This concept was translated into a traditional park pavilion shade structure, which also incorporated a slow stream water element within the park. The second option embraced a more abstract and artistic approach, using the form of a butterfly's wing as the central piece for shade. These wings were designed to vary in shape and size on a single column, providing multiple points of shade. This design served more as a folly than a conventional shade pavilion. Both design ideas were sketched using ink and markers to swiftly capture the essence of the concepts and present them to the landscape architect and client for further discussion and refinement.
