Design Charette

Landology approached Project Luong with a concept for a Butterfly Park in the Bridgeland community, centering the design around the Tawny Butterfly. Our firm seized this opportunity to flex every employee's design muscle by holding a studio-wide design charrette. Each team member was given a prompt and an hour to draw or write anything that would convey their design intent.

Design Whittling

After the initial design charrette and client meeting, it was decided to develop two main design concepts into the architectural shade elements for the park. The first design took a literal approach, resembling a butterfly descending for water or food. This concept was translated into a traditional park pavilion shade structure, which also incorporated a slow stream water element within the park. The second option embraced a more abstract and artistic approach, using the form of a butterfly's wing as the central piece for shade. These wings were designed to vary in shape and size on a single column, providing multiple points of shade. This design served more as a folly than a conventional shade pavilion. Both design ideas were sketched using ink and markers to swiftly capture the essence of the concepts and present them to the landscape architect and client for further discussion and refinement.

Final Renderings

After several meetings with the client's team, the decision was made to proceed with the abstract wing shade option. This exciting art folly will serve as a distinctive addition to the neighborhood park, offering shade while infusing the space with vibrant color and personality.
