Oak Hill Lagoon - Big House
The Big House was designed as the main entrance to the picturesque new Crystal Lagoon amenity in Columbia, South Carolina. Serving as both a welcome center and activity hub, it features two distinct functions connected by a shared entry breezeway that takes advantage of the climate, creating a grand sense of arrival, typical of Low Country architectural style. One side offers amenities for the Crystal Lagoon, while the other supports a new beachfront restaurant, ensuring every guest feels at home.

Locally Connected
A successful project reflects its surrounding environment, responding to the needs and culture of the region where it is built, as well as the specific characteristics of the site. Since the Big House will serve as the entry point to all the amenities offered by the new development, it was essential to create a space that welcomes guests, directs them to other on-site destinations, and showcases everything an occupant can look forward to enjoying. Initial concepts placed the building.
Rooted in History
We began the design journey with a mood board of imagery provided by the client and a close examination of the award-winning and historical architecture of the area. We fell in love with the comfort and grace of period homes, characterized by their classical architectural features grounded in a welcoming and comfortable style. This building is inspired by the rich heritage of Low Country architecture and incorporates many design elements that embody Southern hospitality and elegance. Expansive porches with tall windows provide ample space for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. Soft, inviting colors create an aesthetic that blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The classic gabled roof and colonnade evoke the grace of the past and are reminiscent of the comforts of a cherished family home. The façade will feature traditional materials, consisting of a stucco finish above a brick wainscot, several decorative chimneys, and a standing seam metal roof. Several of the tall volumes will have spandrel windows in the attic area, bringing the outside in and creating a light, airy indoor space that feels like summer.
