Project Luong provided Architect of Record (AOR) services to Input Output for their "Data Stream" art installation in the IAH Terminal B APM Station. This installation, a transformative digital light experience, was designed by artists Billy Baccam and Alex Ramos, who integrate science, technology, art, and architecture into unique creations. Project Luong collaborated closely with the artists to revitalize the aging APM platform, enhancing it with a digital experience to captivate the attention of traveling passengers. Activating the space with this innovative digital installation was a challenging yet rewarding task.

Product

Project Luong worked with Input Output to bring their initial sketches to life within the existing space. The Project Luong team developed a unique suspension system to connect the delicate aluminum backbone planned by the artists to the existing steel structure. This suspension system was designed for easy installation during off-peak overnight hours and could be precisely tuned using swage buckles and clamps to achieve the perfect wave shape. A detailed ceiling map was created to indicate the exact locations for each hanger rod and where the artists needed to drill through the ceiling assembly for attachment.

Project Luong also worked with HAS to evaluate security camera views on the platform, ensuring that the new art installation did not block any camera angles or require additional camera relocation. New circuits were run from the central electrical system to power the low-voltage transformers and processing units needed to push digital media through the light installation.

RESULTS + VITAL STATISTICS

In total, the Project Luong team designed a system with 66 individual LED strips spanning precisely through three existing alcove niches in the ceiling. The total light installation length was over 88 feet long, featuring three unique wave patterns and lengths, which guide passengers from one end of the APM platform to the escalators leading down to the terminal.
