Arabella on the Prairie Pavilion

Initial concept studies focused on how the pavilion and surrounding amenities could become a cohesive environment. These explorations tested different relationships between built structures and the landscape, with an emphasis on circulation, gathering spaces, and how residents would move between the pool, playground, and pavilion areas. The studies also informed the placement and orientation of the pavilions, helping establish a layout that reinforces both functionality and a strong connection to the site.

The identity of this pavilion is defined by its sloped roof form, which opens toward the front to create a welcoming and approachable entry while maintaining a clean, efficient structure. The roofline is paired with rounded wood columns, establishing a warm and natural material language that softens the overall form and reinforces a sustainable design approach. Together, these elements create a recognizable silhouette that feels both contemporary and connected to its surroundings.

A colonnade defines the transition between key program areas, creating separation between seating spaces and restrooms while maintaining visibility for safety and accessibility. The wall forms follow the curvature of the surrounding landscape, aligning with site features such as the fire pit and reinforcing the integration between building and environment. This relationship between architecture and landscape creates a cohesive and intentional outdoor experience.

During rain events, the roof drainage system becomes an experiential feature, channeling water through integrated roof drains into the surrounding landscape. This transforms stormwater into a visible and dynamic moment within the site. No matter the weather, the pavilion maintains its presence as a functional and inviting destination, supporting both everyday use and larger community gatherings.

The open pavilion frames a central beer garden and aligns with the adjacent gym pavilion, creating a connected network of outdoor spaces. String lighting adds warmth and atmosphere, enhancing the space during evening use while reinforcing its role as a social hub. Together, these elements establish a layered and engaging environment that supports a variety of activities and strengthens the connection between the pavilion, the landscape, and the broader community.
